Bandwidth

If you need bandwidth, we've got it. We currently have bandwidth agreements with Cogent Communications and Cox Communications. We use them as our primary bandwidth providers. However, our datacenter offers us the capability to interconnect with many additional providers who have switches in the same facility. Should you have a specific need for a particular provider, let us know! We can even handle multi-gigabit requests if required. We are now part of CRGWest's Any2Exchange and will be peering directly with major providers in our datacenters. We are further negotiating new deals with several providers, and will be increasing our level of connectivity substantially.

What we mean: "Average" bandwidth

A brief word about average bandwidth usage: most providers will charge you based on "total transfer" or "95th percentile". This type of billing leads to unpleasantness in your monthly bottom line.

For comparison, calculate our 1Mbps offering across time. At this speed, total transfer comes to 316GB per month.

With other providers, if you go over that 316GB in a calendar month, you simply get hit with an overage fee, which can be huge. This practice is similar to cell phone minutes over your monthly allowance.

"95th percentile" billing is similar in that they take samples of your bandwidth over a month, and toss out the top 5% of numbers. That's not much, and can also lead to ugly overage charges.

Also beware of providers that offer "unlimited bandwidth".

How can they do that?
Short answer is: they cannot.

Anyone that offers that deal is using low-quality, non-redundant bandwidth that is massively oversubscribed. What's that mean? Over-subscription equals very poor service for your money. Check their service agreements for their exit clause in cases of "unusual bandwidth consumption". These providers rely on a high volume of low-margin customers. Churn is no big deal for them. We prefer to keep our customers, and keep them happy. No hidden deals, no offers that are too good to be true. We offer bandwidth that is high-quality, managed, redundant, and secure. We manage all the routing, switching, and firewalling for you so your traffic always reaches your server all the time. Guaranteed*.

How we do it differently

We charge based on 5-minute samples averaged over a two hour period, and then averaged over the calendar month. If you are at or below your monthly commitment, there's no extra charge.

This means that you can have a big spike in bandwidth such as a popular download or live event and it won't affect your bill. We also offer special event-based pricing that requires no commitment for just such a situation.

To top it off, our NOC keeps a close human eye on the bandwidth usage, and will report any overages to you before you get your bill.

We'll work diligently with you to ensure that you get the best service for the best price. That's our promise.
